One of the more moving places to visit while in Halifax is the Titanic Grave Site. The Graves are in Fairview Lawn Cemetery. Halifax was the closest seaport to the sinking and so became the base for the recovery operations for the victims of the Titanic sinking.
As the victims were recovered, they were assigned a number. Their belongings were placed in a bag with the corresponding number and place with the body in the body bags.
Many of the grave markers simply have the number assigned to the body and the date of the sinking.
The gravestones are on plinths created to look like upturned ship’s hulls.
